In The Netherlands we know this weather all too well. Spring, summer, autumn or winter. No matter what season it is, the rain can suddenly start pouring down. Sometimes you know in advance, sometimes it surprises you while you’re driving or just about to get into the car. With these types of weather, it’s important to change your way of driving to protect your own safety, and that of others.
Did you know that on average, it rains about 873 millimeters per jaar in The Netherlands? A big rainfall can be quite annoying while you’re driving. You can’t see as much and the road becomes slippery. This could make you feel less stable and secure on the road. With the tips in this blog, you can hit the road well prepared during a big rain storm.
Tip 1: Change your speed
This might seem obvious, but it is very important. Lower your speed to increase your grip on the road. Your windshield wipers also work better when you drive a little slower.
Tip 2: Break sooner
On wet roads, it’s a lot easier for a car to slide. So when you break, it can take you longer to actually come to a halt, than when the roads are dry. Start breaking sooner, to make sure you’ve decreased your speed on time.
Tip 3: Keep your distance
Because it takes you longer to break, it’s also important to keep your distance from the vehicle in front of you. This gives you more time to break, slow down or anticipate when they do something unexpected. Preferably, keep double the distance you normally would.
Tip 4: Window heating
Your windshield and rear window can easily fog up when it’s raining. Turn on your air conditioning and your rear window heating to keep your view as best as possible.
Tip 5: Don’t use cruise control
It’s important to pay extra attention when you’re driving in a rainstorm. That’s why it’s better to now use your cruise control. When you do use it, it can slow down your reaction time.
Tip 6: Clean your windshield
Windshield wipers work best on a clean windshield. Make sure that your windshield is not too dirty for optimal sight.
