DRIVING TIPS

DRIVING SAFELY DURING A HEATWAVE

Every type of weather requires a different manner of driving. Not only is it important to pay extra attention in heavy rain of thick fog, high temperatures also ask for some extra measurements. We might (unfortunately) not have these hot days very often in the Netherlands, but every now and then they come around. In this blog we give you a few tips for hitting the road on a hot summer's day, so you’re sure to arrive at your destination safely.

Tip 1: Bring enough water

This might not directly have something to do with your driving style, but it is very important to hydrate on a hot day. Make sure you always bring enough water if you’re going to drive a long distance. Being dehydrated causes you to have a less clear head, which could have dangerous consequences.

Tip 2: Air conditioning

During a roadtrip on a hot day, the air conditioning in your car is your best friend. But only if you use it correctly. Never set the temperature of the air conditioning less than 6ºC than the outside temperature. If you set the temperature too low, you could end up with a cold, a headache or pain in your throat. Also never aim the air conditioning at your face. This could cause irritated or teary eyes.

Tip 3: Bring an umbrella

This might sound weird when we’re talking about hot and sunny days. But an umbrella can come in handy. If you’re in bad luck and end up with car trouble on the side of the road, an umbrella can provide shade and protection from the bright sun.

Tip 4: Take plenty of breaks

This is always important when you’re driving long distances. Taking a break gives you a chance to stretch your legs and relax your head, this is especially important when you’re driving with high temperatures. When the temperature hits 27ºC or higher, our heads get tired quicker than usual. This leads to a less clear mind, which causes us to respond less quickly and anticipate slower.

Tip 5: Bring sunglasses

This might seem like an obvious tip, but it definitely is not unimportant. Not only can the sun shine in your eyes, a clear sky and sun also make the road brighter. Especially when the sun is at its brightest, the light can be too intense for our eyes. Because of this, our eyes can get irritated and tired more quickly. Always put on a pair of sunglasses when making a sunny road trip.
